Spicy Watermelon Agua Fresca & Margarita

August 3, 2017 by zenbelly 5 Comments

If there’s an official list of the most summery things possible, I bet that something like this Watermelon Agua Fresca & Margarita is on it.

Watermelon + Lime + Cayenne + Salt is one of the greatest flavor combinations of all time. I did not invent it, but I did add tequila to it recently, and I was very happy with the outcome.

With or without the booze, this is the epitome of the refreshing summer beverage. If you’re hosting a backyard bash this summer, make a big batch of this. If you keep the booze on the side, you’ll have your beverage for everyone, and you only had to make one. If there are kids at the party, it might be a good idea to leave the cayenne out, too.

If you have extra watermelon, dice and freeze it to make watermelon ice cubes!

  • Author: Simone Miller
  • Yield: 24 ounces agua fresca / 6 cocktails
  • Category: Drinks
  • Cuisine: Mexican

Ingredients

For the Agua Fresca:

  • 4 cups cubed watermelon ((a 6-pound watermelon was more than enough))
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup very hot water
  • 1/3 cup lime juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne ((Provides a nice mellow heat; adjust to your preference))
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt

For each Spicy Watermelon Margarita:

  • ice
  • 2 ounces blanco tequila
  • 4 ounces  watermelon aqua fresca
  • sea salt
  • lime wedge

Instructions

For the Agua Fresca:

  1. Blend the watermelon in a blender until it’s juice.
  2. In a large bowl, dissolve the honey in the hot water. Whisk in the lime juice, cayenne, and salt
  3. Strain the watermelon juice into the honey mixture through a fine-mesh strainer. Whisk to combine.
  4. Refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 4 days. Serve over ice cubes and/or watermelon ice cubes.

For each Margarita:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice, the tequila, and agua fresca. Shake it like you mean it for 30 seconds or so.
  2. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass. Invert the glass onto a plate of sea salt. Fill with ice and/or watermelon ice cubes.
  3. Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the glass. Squeeze in the lime wedge.

haha yes, it would be great with vodka, too! I think I’m going to make a big batch for our labor day party and have booze on the side for people to add if they’d like 🙂

I made a double batch of this and used half to do a second ferment for my kombucha. Delicious!
