We all know that cooking at home is one of the most important steps we can take to eat healthier. In some cases, though, that’s easier said than done. Even when we have millions of recipes at our fingertips that can be made in 30 minutes or less- that 30 minutes doesn’t include the planning and shopping. That’s the truly time consuming part! And for some, cooking isn’t something that feels intuitive, and sorting through recipes can be daunting and stressful.
Enter Sun Basket. They’re here to take almost all of those steps away, and replace them with a box of fresh, seasonal ingredients and tested recipes.
Here’s how it works:
- You choose 3 recipes for 2, 4 or 6 people – customizing for gluten-free, paleo, or vegetarian diets is no problem.
- An insulated box arrives with the pre-measured ingredients and easy to follow recipe cards.
- You make dinner! That’s pretty much it. No need to worry about the recipe flopping or that you bought the wrong cut of beef or forgot a key ingredient. It’s all there, and you were able to go home after work instead of standing in line at the grocery store.
- Returning the packaging is easy, too- they provide a label and instructions. The box gets picked up outside your door (crucial to me because getting to the post office is strangely difficult for some reason)
I got to try meals from Sun Basket and was really happy with the results. The thing I loved most, if I’m going to be honest? I got to cook dinner without thinking about what I was going to cook. It was truly a luxury. The meals themselves were delicious; great flavor combinations that I have since been inspired by, and super high quality ingredients.
There is really only one thing I would change about the recipes: I’m not crazy about recipes using “season to taste with salt and pepper”, since a good deal of people don’t know what the end result should taste like. If you have my first cookbook, you know I’m a bit of a stickler for providing actual measurements for salt.
I also feel obligated to say yes, there is a fair amount of packaging when food is delivered this way- it’s somewhat unavoidable. But it’s all recyclable and returnable, so I really can’t be too mad about it. To me, the fact that they’re so responsible about sourcing ingredients outweighs the packaging.
All in all, I think this recipe delivery service is a great way for people to not only make cooking at home easier, but also to gain some kitchen confidence. A couple of the meals I tried:
… both delicious, as were the other meals I got to try. I felt the serving sizes were spot on as well, for us. On some occasions, we had some leftovers of the veggie sides.
To sum up: I would absolutely recommend Sun Basket for anyone who wants to cook more but is limited on time, or anyone who is burnt out on “what’s for dinner?’.
