It’s got like… Electrolytes.

October 22, 2018 by zenbelly 4 Comments

Have you seen Idiocracy? Do you remember how it used to be a comedy? Well it’s a documentary now, so that’s neat. If you haven’t seen the movie, I recommend it, and you’ll get the title of this blog post once you do.

Either way, it’s important to stay hydrated, and sometimes drinking water just doesn’t seen to cut it. I’ve made this Electrolyte Lemonade many times, and there are plenty of variations to it. The main components I always use are:

  1. Citrus
  2. Salt
  3. Honey (or maple syrup)
  4. Coconut Water

Depending on your preference, you can also add some fruit juice, more sweetener if it’s too tart with the amount listed in the recipe, or even charcoal for a detox version. It’s perfect for Halloween because it’s there’s something fun and spooky about drinks that are black.

Kind of cool, right? I especially like this version with blood oranges. The one I make most often is simply lemon and lime juice, coconut water, salt, honey, and water.

You could even make it more like spa water and add some cucumber slices, basil or mint, berries… The possibilities are virtually endless.

A great alternative to Gatorade or other sports drinks when water just doesn’t cut it.

  • juice of one lemon
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 cup cool filtered water

Instructions

  1. In a quart sized jar, dissolve the honey and salt in the hot water. (Add the charcoal if using as well)

My favorite charcoal is the takesumi, which comes in both capsules and powder.

As long as open coconut water keeps, so 4-5 days or so?

Can you recommend a substitute for coconut water?

Any fruit juice or herbal tea would work!
